How does Napoleon uses his power to control the animals?

Napoleon uses his powers in many ways; he uses lies, intelligence and intimidation. He uses all these technics to control the animals to think and do what and how he wants. He uses intimidation, or in other words, he coerces the animals to do what he wants. “… in August Napoleon announced that there would be work on Sunday afternoons as well. This work was strictly voluntary, but any animal who absented himself from it would have his rations reduced by half” (pg. 44). Basically what Napoleon is saying is that they have to work the hours he says mandatorily, there’s no way out, or you work or you get you rations reduced by half.

The other that is used by Napoleon is the lies and the superior intelligence he has as a pig and the on in charge of the farm. “No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets.”(pg. 50) Napoleon lied to the animals and told them that sleeping in beds was ok of it was without sheets, but the truth is that in the seven commandments it clearly said that no animal shall sleep in bed. Napoleon wrote “with sheets” on it so the animals, that aren't able to remember what it said, will believe him and sleep in beds.
Napoleon also uses intimidation as a resource; he uses that so the animals would be afraid of him. “The four pigs who had protested when Napoleon abolished the Meetings raised their voices timidly, but they were promptly silenced by a tremendous growling from the dogs” (pg. 47). This says that all animals that opposed to Napoleon ideas would be punished by the dos, so they weren't able to think or do what they wanted.

At the end it is clear; Napoleon used many devices to trick the animals to do and think how and what he wants. And he ends up getting it.

News story
Animals become heroes in battle against awful farmers

This is the story of how some great animals defeat abusive farmers in a local farm. All farm type animals fought against the humans for the control of a farm. Humans armed with guns and sticks, and animals armed with a great strategy that a known general will talk about it later on this article. There are two witnesses on this event they were interviewed, Boxer, an honest and great horse and Snowball a pig that was the leader on this great rebellion.

The first witness is Snowball; we asked him what happened and how they were so ready for this event. He answered: “When the humans came and we started to attack to, then Jones attacked me so I went to him and tried to take him to the ground. At the end we win and only one of ours died.  I have been reading some strategy books and I also sent some pigeons to check on the humans.” The second witness is Boxer; we asked him what happened with the farmer he attacked. Boxer answered: “I didn’t knew I was going to hurt him that bad and that I didn’t knew I had my horseshoes on, fortunately he didn’t died.”

Then we interview Gregorio Palmettour, he is a French general that participle in world war two. He was and still is really goes at knowing about strategies, so we asked him how it was possible for the animals to win. General Palmettour answered: “the strategy the animals used under the command of Snowball is unbelievable; the way he made the animals organize is great for being an animal. I have used those technics myself and are perfect for a battle like this one, so that’s why the animals won.”
As you can see, the animals fairly won the battle against the abusers of the farmers. The animals will continue with their normal lives in the farm, and keep up with the hard work they were doing.

“Animal Farm in 2013”

Propaganda is used in most parts of “Animal Farm”. The definition of propaganda is: information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.
The first time propaganda is used in the book is when old Major uses many rhetoric devices to convince the animals about humans and how they are evil and their common enemy. All he says about how humans are mean and that animals should race against them is propaganda. The way he says it and how he want all animals to think and do what he want is propaganda, all for a reason.  This makes the animals to think and act how he wants them to.  The second time when there was propaganda in “Animal Farm” is when the pigs talk to the animals so they can convince them to follow the seven commandments. Propaganda is used because and the end the result was again what they expected.  This is how in the book most of the animals are controlled by other animals, and other thoughts. This is how propaganda is used in “Animal Farm”.

Essay chapter 1 animal farm

Major uses rhetoric in his speech in a number of ways. His aim is to make the animals conscious of their situation and to convince them to overthrow human. He uses tricolon, rhetorical questions and contrast to persuade the animals of his utopian vision.
The reason why Major used tricolon is because is a way of making them feel confortable a way of making the animals feel comfortable. So he uses three examples of anything and that makes the animals feel identify because they can be in that example. “To the horror we all must come- cows, pigs, hens, sheep, everyone.” (pg.5).  Major uses tricolon so he can make everyone at the farm feel identified with this topic.
Major uses rhetorical questions because it is the best way to make someone reflect. He uses this because he wants to get the animals to change of opinion about humans. That’s why he uses so many rhetorical questions, so he can make all the animals to think the way he wants them to think. “Now, comrades, what’s the nature of this life of ours.” (pg.3). “is it not crystal clear, then, comrades, that all the evils of this life of ours spring from the tyranny of human beings?” (pg.5)
He uses contrast to make the animals think that humans are their enemies and that they must fight them. To get the animals together and make them against humans. “Man serves the interests of no creature except himself. And among us animals let there be perfect unity, perfect comradeships, in the struggle. All men are enemies. All animals are comrades.” (pg.6)
In conclusion I have to say that Major used all this figures to make his point better for the animals to understand and identify with it, so they can join him. He wants rebellion from the animals, and he uses these figures to get it.

Animal Farm, an introduction
my favorite character is major. his relationship with the other animals, at least in the first chapter is that he is the one in charge of the order in the farm, and also he knows everybody and the story of their lives. he was the one that said the speech for the whole farm, and he thought they should do a rebellion and that humans are really bad and mean. humans are any good for the animals, for him humans shouldn't exist. this is my favorite character because he is kind of like me, he wants to be in charge all the time. he is really reasonable and he doesn't content with a little he wants more, plus he is a pig :).

  1. Nice work Camila, I am glad you have found a personal connection to your favourite character! Does he really want to be in charge, or does he merely feel that he must take charge as he is the only one who could lead a change? Next time, start to think about the deeper meaning of the characters and situations in the book in terms of their wider allegorical significance.

Language note for blog writing: punctuation is still important. Sentences always begin with a capital letter.

  2. There is some good writing and a clear outline to your essay, well done. However, you must use P.E.A structure: make a point, give and example, and then analyse the example in detail. In the above essay, you have given a point, described the point you want to make, and then put an example at the end without explaining what that quote means, why it was used, and why it was an effective example of the point you were making which is very unfortunate.

If you can get the structure, you will start to unlock some very thoughtful work.

  4. You don't appear to have revised your work after the above advice. The entry has been graded on the work submitted above.

  5. The report on the Battle of the Cowshed is clearly sympathetic to the animals and starts with a strong headline. There is lovely use of metaphor when you describe the animals as, "Armed with a great strategy."

Your account is factual and accurate, as are your representations of your eyewitnesses and your expert commentator.

Your photograph needs a caption to tie it in to the article properly and give it an emotive purpose. And some careless mistakes with words and grammar make the meaning unclear, particularly near the end where you intend to describe the farmers as abusive, but instead suggest that the farmers are the victims of abuse.

However, on the whole this is a good piece of work, and the attention to structure and organisation in your writing has paid off.

  6. Another good piece of analysis, well done. Your ideas are clearly organised and you show good use of P.E.A. to develop each point.

You can raise your grades further by adding your own inferences and external knowledge into the analysis of each quote. For example, in addition to explaining what your first quote means, you could add how you think the animals would react: do they think this is fair? Are there any animals who might realise that they are being manipulated? What might this behaviour refer to in the Russian Revolution, or more general human history?
